Snowflake Semantic Views vs Databricks Metric Views: Which Platform Owns Your Business Logic
Both Snowflake and Databricks shipped native semantic layers within months of each other. Snowflake launched Semantic Views. Databricks launched Metric Views with Unity Catalog Business Semantics. Both are telling the same story: define your metrics once, govern them centrally, and let every dashboard and AI agent consume the same definitions.
They are also both making the same bet: that the semantic layer belongs inside the data platform, not in external middleware. This is a controversial architectural position. And the choice between these two approaches may lock your organization into a data strategy for the next five years.
I have built Snowflake implementations for companies in the Netherlands since 2018, back when the platform was still convincing enterprises to leave on-premise data warehouses. I have seen the evolution firsthand. And I think the warehouse-native semantic layer trend is both genuinely important and genuinely dangerous if you do not understand what you are trading away.
What Snowflake Semantic Views Actually Do
Snowflake Semantic Views let you define metrics, dimensions, and relationships as first-class database objects. Instead of embedding business logic in a BI tool or a separate middleware layer, you create semantic definitions that live directly in Snowflake alongside your tables and views.
The practical impact: every tool that connects to Snowflake sees the same governed definitions. Cortex Analyst, Snowflake's AI assistant, reasons directly over these semantic views when answering natural language questions. A business user asking "What was Q3 revenue in EMEA?" gets an answer grounded in the same metric definition that powers the finance dashboard, the marketing report, and the AI agent running automated analysis.
Snowflake also leads the Open Semantic Interchange initiative, which means the definitions you create in Semantic Views are designed to be portable through the OSI standard. Over 40 ecosystem partners including dbt Labs, Salesforce, Cube, AtScale, and ThoughtSpot have committed to OSI interoperability. This is Snowflake saying: we want to be the authoring environment for semantic definitions, but we will not hold them hostage.
The integration with Cortex AI is the real strategic play. Snowflake is building a world where your semantic layer feeds directly into AI agents that operate inside the same platform where your data lives. No API calls to external services. No middleware latency. No separate authentication layer. The intelligence stays close to the data.
What Databricks Metric Views Actually Do
Databricks Metric Views, now generally available through Unity Catalog Business Semantics, take a similar approach from the lakehouse side. You define metrics as governed objects within Unity Catalog, and those definitions propagate to every connected tool.
The architectural distinction is in how Metric Views handle aggregation. Databricks separates measure definitions from dimension groupings, which means you define a metric once and query it across any available dimension at runtime. The query engine dynamically generates correct aggregations regardless of grouping dimensions. This prevents the proliferation of separate materialized views for every possible dimension combination.
Unity Catalog provides the governance backbone: row-level security, column-level masking, and full audit logging of who accessed which metric definition and when. This is not semantic layer governance bolted on as an afterthought. It is integrated into the same governance framework that controls access to tables, models, and every other data asset in the lakehouse.
Databricks has also open-sourced the core implementation of Unity Catalog Business Semantics in Apache Spark. This matters because it extends the semantic model beyond Databricks itself. Organizations running Spark in other environments can theoretically leverage the same semantic constructs. Databricks is betting on ecosystem breadth through open source.
The BI tool ecosystem for Metric Views is expanding rapidly. Tableau, Sigma, Hex, Omni, and ThoughtSpot have all announced or shipped integrations. The goal is that an analyst working in any of these tools sees the same governed metric definitions without any additional configuration.
The Trade-offs Nobody Tells You About
Here is where most comparison articles stop: they list features, show a table, and declare a winner. That is useless for an actual architectural decision. The real question is what you are trading away with either choice.
Lock-in is the first trade-off. A warehouse-native semantic layer ties your business logic to your data platform. If you define 500 metrics in Snowflake Semantic Views and later decide to move workloads to Databricks, those definitions do not migrate automatically. OSI promises future portability, but the specification is in Phase 1 and no vendor has shipped production-grade import tooling yet. The promise is real. The implementation is not here today.
Multi-warehouse environments are the second trade-off. Many enterprises run both Snowflake and Databricks for different workloads. Finance on Snowflake, data science on Databricks. A warehouse-native semantic layer only governs metrics in its own platform. You end up with two semantic layers that may define "revenue" differently. This is the exact problem the semantic layer was supposed to solve.
BI tool coverage is the third trade-off. Standalone tools like Cube and AtScale connect to any warehouse and any BI tool simultaneously. They act as a universal translation layer. Warehouse-native semantic layers depend on each BI vendor building a dedicated integration. Until every tool in your stack supports Semantic Views or Metric Views natively, there will be gaps where ungoverned SQL creeps back in.
Performance optimization is where warehouse-native wins. Because the semantic layer lives inside the query engine, the optimizer can make decisions that external middleware cannot. Snowflake can push computation down to its micro-partitions. Databricks can leverage Delta Lake statistics. The query planner sees the semantic definitions and the physical data layout simultaneously, which enables optimizations that no external API can replicate.
The Intelligence Allocation Question
The question is not "Snowflake or Databricks?" The question is: where should your semantic intelligence live?
If your data is consolidated in one platform and you plan to keep it there, the warehouse-native semantic layer reduces complexity. You are allocating semantic intelligence to the data foundation layer, which is often the right call when the foundation is mature and well-governed.
If your data spans multiple platforms, multiple clouds, or multiple warehouse vendors, a standalone semantic layer is the safer architectural bet. You are allocating semantic intelligence to a dedicated layer that can serve any data source, rather than tying it to one platform's governance model.
The honest answer for most enterprises: you probably need both. A warehouse-native semantic layer handles 80% of use cases where data and consumers live in the same ecosystem. A standalone layer handles the 20% where cross-platform governance matters. OSI will eventually bridge the gap, but building your architecture on promises that have not shipped yet is how data teams end up rebuilding from scratch in 18 months.
What I Tell Clients
Start with the metrics, not the tools. Before you evaluate a single vendor, get your finance team, your marketing team, and your product team in a room and agree on 20 definitions. What is revenue? What is an active customer? What is churn? If you cannot get alignment on definitions, no semantic layer tool will save you. The technology is the easy part. The organizational alignment is what makes or breaks the implementation.
Then ask where those definitions need to be consumed. If the answer is "mostly inside Snowflake dashboards and Cortex AI," Semantic Views are the fastest path. If the answer is "mostly inside Databricks notebooks and AI models," Metric Views make sense. If the answer is "everywhere, by everything, across three clouds," you need a standalone tool.
For every dollar you spend on AI, six should go to the data architecture underneath it. The semantic layer is where that investment has the highest leverage. It does not matter which vendor you choose. It matters that you choose one, define your metrics, govern them properly, and build every AI initiative on top of governed business logic instead of raw, uncontextualized data.
The companies that get this right will deploy AI agents that make trustworthy decisions. The companies that skip this step will deploy agents that hallucinate with authority. The warehouse-native vs standalone debate is secondary. Having a semantic layer at all is the decision that matters.
